Understanding the Connection Between Emotions and the Health of Your Organs

Did you know that in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), there is a strong emphasis on the interconnectedness of your emotions and physical health?

And because of this, I have adopted the belief that your emotions can impact the flow of qi (vital energy) in the body, leading to imbalances and, eventually, your illnesses.

Next, I will provide you 5 common associations between your emotions and the specific organs they correlate with:

  1. Liver: Anger and frustration are associated with the Liver. Long-term emotional stress or unresolved anger can lead to liver qi (vital energy) stagnation. This can potentially manifest as headaches, neck tension, or digestive issues.

  2. Heart: The Heart is linked to joy. But you would have never realized that excessive joy or overstimulation, as well as a lack of joy, can affect your Heart's function. This kind of Emotional imbalance is usually related to the Heart manifesting as insomnia, heart palpitations, or anxiety.

  3. Spleen/Pancreas: Worry and overthinking are associated with the Spleen/Pancreas. Massaging this organ, I find a lot of tension, deep tension, in this area of the body. Emotional stress in this area may contribute to digestive issues, fatigue, or weakened immune function.

  4. Lungs: Grief and sadness impact the Lungs. Many of my patients will have shoulders rolled the forward, pain in their neck going down their arms, including numbness and tingling, but overall the emotional imbalances in the Lung area might be connected to respiratory issues, such as asthma or  even the shortness of breath.

  5. Kidneys: Fear and anxiety are linked to the Kidneys. Chronic fear or anxiety may affect kidney function and manifest as issues like lower back pain, reproductive problems, or urinary issues. I also noticed that a lot of my clients will have massive sensitivity on the inner parts of their legs and foot issues on the arch and soul of the foot.

This wraps up the five organs I thought were most important to cover today because these are the ones that I see the most in my clinic.

Today's world is not filled with just pain that can be felt physically, it is also filled with pains that are unseen, trapped, usually discarded or tossed aside because it's the physical that is most obvious.

It's important to note that I view your emotions and physical health holistically, considering your individual constitution, your lifestyle, and your overall balance.

Thus, my treatments address both your emotional and physical aspects in that moment.
